An extremely hardy evergreen palm tree with an attractive, compact crown with large, stiff, fan-like, green foliage and distinctive hairy black fibers covering its slender, graceful trunk. A striking specimen that is excellent for making a tropical statement in smaller landscapes and rock gardens. Works well in group plantings and containers. This is not only incredibly hardy for a palm, it is the best choice for small gardens. Growing as a single, hairy trunk it begins as a foundation plant that eventually matures as a tall, thin column. Because it does not branch, and keeps a very tight foliage head, it fits very well into small spaces, sideyards, or as a specimen in rock gardens. Plant three or more close together to achieve a cluster or grove in tropical garden schemes. Ideal plant for swimming pool enclosures. Provide organically rich, moist, very porous, well-drained soil. Water deeply, regularly during first few growing seasons to establish an extensive root system. Once established, prefers regular water, but tolerates periodic drought. Feed in early spring before new growth emerges.
