Regarded as one of the best Japanese Maples, the award-winning Acer palmatum is a small rounded tree of great beauty in all seasons. Reaching a maturity height and width between 15 ft. - 20 ft. this Japanese Maple is nicely suited for residential landscapes, particularly smaller yards. Its popularity is due mostly to the leaves, which stay red for most of the summer. Leaves turn greenish red during hot weather in the southern part of its range. The trunk is muscular-looking, picturesque, grey and show nicely when lighted at night. Fall color is reddish and less striking than other Japanese maples. The Red Japanese Maple is a full sun or part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in moist, organically rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Leaves can scorch in hot summer weather unless they are in some shade or irrigated during dry weather. More direct sun can be tolerated in the northern part of the range. Be sure drainage is maintained, and never allow water to stand around the roots. Japanese maples grow well on clay soils as long as the ground is sloped so that water does not accumulate in the soil. Mulch helps retain soil moisture and keeps roots protected. Best leaf color in partial shade, although full sun can be tolerated. Perfect as specimen plant. The Red Japanese Maple is hardy in USDA Zones 5-8 and is shipped in a #7 pot with a minimum tree height of 36 in. Due to the trees shipping from Florida, please expect the leaves to be greenish red.
