Belle of Woking' is a deciduous, hardy clematis with flushed mauve, 4 in. flowers that age to a silvery lilac or pale gray. The plant grows about 7 ft.tall and produces blooms that resemble multipetaled antique roses, with bright green foliage on coiling leafstalks. Cultivate in loamy, well-drained, yet moisture-retentive soil, never soggy, and provide good air circulation. Clematis requires full sun to bloom best, but roots must be kept cool. Regular feeding during the growing season is necessary, and dead or weak stems should be removed in late spring. Flowering shoots should also be pruned back a bit to encourage rebloom in fall. If moving a plant is necessary, do so in early spring, lifting carefully and keeping the root-ball intact. 'Belle of Woking' is a challenging clematis to grow, but worth the effort. Carefully tie in nodding stems for added support during strong winds.
